Hi Rajachandran,
I appreciate very much the mission you and Quadsia have undertaken to improve the quality of English education in schools by enhancing the capability of some of the young teachers. Money well spent as a better qualified teacher would open up the world for thousands of children during the professional life of one teacher. Think of the benefits to the Tamil community if even 50 teachers improve their quality of English by the facilities you are providing.
Best regards
Param Paramanathan

Dear Giri and Sri
I want you to put this on Face book/U tube/twitter.
How can I do this, please help me with this task.
I will send you the text to go with it.
Qudsia and my first class of English teachers being trained by the British council, Jaffna.
You can see Qudsia and I on the screen, speaking to them last Friday.
Both of were overwhelmed emotionally. We felt that the money spent by us on English education was well spent. This is because we feel that the future of the Tamil people in the Northern Province depends on English. Both of us met only through English. We therefore, have also sentimental reasons to believe in this.
Pass this on to friends.

Dear Raj,
The Skype conversation did go well and the participants were pleased to have the opportunity to (e-)meet you. I've attached a couple of photographs of the group for you.
Shall we have a Skype call next Friday, 26 August at 10.00am your time? They will have completed 30 hours at this point and so, as you suggest, this is a good point to have another chat.
Because we selected everyone who had this proficiency level, it will be difficult to replace any participants who drop out (this would have been the same with the other group too). However, if this does happen, we can do further placement testing to find replacements.
I would expect most absences, if/when they occur, to be during these initial, more intensive, weeks. This is because there was a very short time-frame between testing and selection. The participants were not aware of the time commitment involved and they are currently on their holidays which they had originally filled with appointments and engagements. They are having to re-arrange these where possible. I am impressed by the attendance, motivation and participation shown so far. Once school starts and they begin attending only on Fridays, I would expect far fewer absences as the training days will be a normal part of their working week.
I hope I do not become indisposed! If I do, unfortunately there are no other trainers present to cover the training sessions so we would need to reschedule the training days at a later date. As you know, our new trainer is expected in country early September (visas permitting). He will take over from me in delivering the course. I will then be available should he ever be unable to take a session.
I look forward to catching up with Soori and he is welcome to observe and talk to the group. Happy to meet Mr and Mrs Chelian and talk to them about the project (and thank you for the forewarning).
Let's catch up next week
Becky

Subject: Today's Skype
Dear Becky,
You made my day!
It was a pleasure seeing your students and speaking to some of them today.
I was overcome by emotion. Qudsia too thought they were a lively lot of student teachers.
This was the second time you and I had a chat on Skype, and it seemed as though that we were old friends!
I made the teachers comfortable, I hope, by addressing then in Tamil first, and following it up in English.
I do hope hope they understood my mission and vision.
I had to inform them why I was spending my money on this project, why I am hoping that they will be the best English teachers after they follow this course, why their students are our future and our future leaders.
I also hope that they understood my offer of a prize to all those who will complete the course without any absence.
I think I had to tell them that it is costing me almost one Lakh of rupees to train each of them, that I don't want any money returned to me, but instead I want to make them better teachers to teach excellent English and make the Tamil community prosper, and the reason why I am keen on this idea.
They seemed to be aware of the Tamil youth delving in alcohol and drug taking in the northern province.
Becky, I would like to talk to the students again when they have completed 30 hours of training.
At that time I want to talk to them only in English, and I will like to ask some questions, to find out how they reply to me and to Qudsia. You could brief them about the seconding encounter. I will make it pleasant and enjoyable and will not be intimidating.
The third encounter will be when they have done 60 hours, and then at 90 hours and at the final graduation.
Please let me know what arrangements you have in hand to invite standbys, should there be a dropout. Anyone from Kokuvil Hindu College.?
Where was the lady who was going to get married seated? I could have congratulated her!
Can you also please let know what contingency plans you have. should you, hopefully not, become indisposed. This is because it is my medical mind ticking.
When is this other trainer arriving? You will have to spend sometime with him to brief him before he starts work. You can then have a break.
Perhaps we can discuss these when we speak again next Wednesday.
Soori will be with you in a few days time. I have asked him to be a silent observer in your class and he will be an asset to you to discuss matters arising.
I would also like him to give a talk to the teachers one day after class is over, about how they should approach the problems, that he is quite aware of, about the present day youth of Jaffna. He will speak only in English.
There will be a couple called Mr and Mrs Chelian who may visit you. I have been requested not to allow them to sit as observers. Please find an excuse not to let them sit with the teachers. You can give them an appointment after school and discuss the progress that you are making. I am told that the said lady can be a little abrupt and could easily disrupt the class. Sorry for giving you this trouble.
Raj

Dear Kailas
It was nice "meeting" you on Skype. I am glad that you are pursuing with your Ph.D.
